I don’t get a chance to use the 70-300 Nikkor VR lens very often (sometimes I take it out of my pack to lighten the load) but it is a very nice, sharp lens and fairly lightweight for it’s size. On enlargement, I can read the writing on the side (US Customs and Border Protection) and even see the pilot’s face. Webster (Where Life is Worth Living) and Rochester border Lake Ontario, so there are Customs offices here and it’s not unusual to see their presence every now and then.

Oh, I do like mystery objects. I have no idea what this one is. I can’t even tell if the thing in the middle is a mirror or glass, though I expect it’s glass. And the yellow paint confuses me even further. Can’t wait to know what it is.

Thanks, John. The shot looks like it was taken at eye level and I was going to make up some story about being in my own helicopter when I shot it but who would believe that? I was on the ground (in my backyard) as the pilot banked toward me giving this straight on view.
I am going to go for the D600 package again (it comes with that lens and I loved it when I used it). Have to keep trying and find a model w/o the dust bunnies as my D7100 shutter seems to be getting stuck when I shot. 😦
Anyway, I think it is a grave marker for old Chevys…………
It works well with the D600 and it has a nice balance. The camera store I purchased it from offers free lifetime sensor cleaning and it hasn’t been a problem.
Good guess on the photo but incorrect, unfortunately.
Was it local? I have no camera stores in my area but have found B&H to have excellent customer service.

Sorry, I didn’t get here in time for guessing the object. I ended up selling my Nikon 70-300 lens — it’s a good lens but I have the Nikon 28-300 so the 70-300 was redundant.
I guess if you put the 28-300 on the D600 you never have to take it off. I don’t know how they compare for sharpness but you would probably have to look pretty close to see a difference.
Yeah, it’s certainly an all around lens…great for walk abouts. It is very close in sharpness to the 70-300 but with a little more distortion, which can easily be corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop. I decided the distortion was worth the extra range.
