I like how the yellow light is reflected in the windows in the color version. But overall, I like the b&w version a lot better; the clouds and the water seem to have more definition.
Thanks, Mel. I tried to bring out the windows in these versions as I think that this house was designed to take advantage of the view, especially to the North.
A classic example of where the two images provide two contrasting moods – both equally valid. A beautiful place, but maybe not so much fun in bad weather.
I must say I find your latest B+W efforts much too starkly contrasty, which leaves me cold. Are you trying something new? Maybe some toning effects could lift them a little!?
My monitor shows a full range of tones in the highlights and shadows. I see detail in the darkest and lightest portions of this photo. I put a lot of effort to bring out as much of the detail and maintain good tonality. It’s interesting that you see this as being too contrasty. I’m using a standard Windows display calibration but it seems pretty accurate when I have prints made. The prints show that my monitor is very close to what I want in a calibration. I wonder if others see this the same as you do but I’ve never gotten any feedback regarding it. I will look into this further.
I prefer the colour, but mostly because of the orange light in the windows, which does not translate in the black and white. A small thing, but that is what makes the difference for me.
Thanks, ehpem. I tried to bring out the colors in the windows first. After that was done I did the B&W conversion. Maybe I should try a selective color on the house.
WOW! I wouldn’t mind living there…love the colour but somehow the b/w makes it look a bit more remote and distant
Thanks, smakedpentax. It’s not as remote as it looks in the photo. The neighbors are very close by but they don’t show in this photo.
I wouldn’t mind either… I love b&w, but in this case I have to say that I prefer the colour version. Fantastic!
Thanks, Malin. I like both, hence my indecision on which one to post.
I like both. But the coloured leads the eyes a little bit better.
Thanks, Ray. I still remain indecisive as to which I prefer.
B&W is great here – very moody, but the colour is fantastic too 😀
Thanks, Mjollnir. I’m glad you like these.

Thanks, Andy. There are times when the North wind is unbearable here but usually it is somewhat cooler in the Summer, too.

Love the b&w version. Love it a lot.
Thanks, Chris. This photo was a natural for the conversion. I like it, too.
I like the b/w best. All those lovely patterns/textures. I find the colour one too overwhelming,
Thanks, Sync. The color version is very “scene accurate” but it tends to be a little gaudy with the orange clouds. Such is nature.
Indeed. I want to tone down the colour on nearly everything I see. 🙂

That could be cool – just on its windows perhaps. It could imply an orange sky.
