polar vortex

We have been having some very cold days here in Western New York but it doesn’t seem to get cold enough for the polar bears.  Maybe if I had a white fur coat like that  wouldn’t mind so much, either.

I know that the few times we went to the Detroit Zoo during winter months many animals, and especially Polar bears, were more active and seemed happier than when we visited in the summer months.

Nice shots, and a beautiful-looking fellow.

Thanks, E. I think it gets too warm in the summer for the polars here. It’s not a natural environment for them. They are most active in winter and the frigid temperatures don’t seem to bother them.

The phrase that springs to mind is along the lines of: ‘no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing’. The polar bear knows a thing or two about bad weather and is dressed accordingly. I feel sorry for these captives in summer – that’s rather cruel to them.

Thanks, Andy. I have mixed feelings about zoos in general. While I like to see these animals I can’t help but think that most would be better off in the wild.
